TITLE: Internship program
REPORTS TO: Programming/News Dept.

SportsNet New York has internships available for the spring, summer, and fall semesters

Interns, who must be at least entering their junior year in college, receive college credit for the internship. Interns will receive hands-on experience assisting in a wide range of the station's operations. Interns generally work approximately 20 hours per week, which may include nights and weekends. Internships are available in the following departments:

Below is a brief description of each internship opportunity available.

News Department: The News Department at SportsNet New York, a regional cable television sports network, is responsible for the day-to-day planning and general implementation of SNY's on-air schedule. Additionally, the department produces "Daily News Live," "The WheelHouse," "Loud Mouths," "Geico SportsNite" and Mets programming, plus handles external communications with various independent program suppliers as well as internal communications with various SportsNet New York departments.

Interns, who must be entering their junior year in college with a 3.0 GPA and receiving college credit for the internship, get hands-on experience assisting in a wide range of the station's operations and work approximately 20 hours per week; 1 shift during the week plus 1 over the weekend -- shifts are 10a-6p and 3-11p.

Responsibilities include:

    • Screening/logging of games, press conferences/interviews and taped programs to prepare for editing
    • Helping Associate Producers in the edit rooms
    • Working on the production of "Daily News Live," "The WheelHouse," "Loud Mouths," "SportsNite" and Mets programming
    • Researching for the various graphic boards used in all shows
    • Preparing, copying and distributing programming information
    • Doing detail work to procure footage from external sources
    • Working the Assignment Desk, answering the main phone line
    • Sending faxes, writing letters, making phone calls, etc.
    • All other duties needed in the station's everyday operation

Candidates should be concentrating in communications with a strong interest in televised sports and production, have some education or training in broadcasting, and proficiency in computers. They also should be familiar with the programming currently presented on SportsNet New York. This is an unpaid internship.

Operations:

Interns in this area report to the Studio & Remote Operations and Engineering Department Managers and are involved in the behind the scenes preparation and planning for all SNY shows both in studio and on remote.

REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS

    • Strong interest in television production and sports

    • Must be an organized, self-motivated, reliable and willing to work on many multi-faceted projects at once

Production:

Interns in the department will assist the Supervising Producer of the Network, including logging tapes, screening shows, and other production-related tasks. Interns will be assigned on-going, daily responsibilities as well as stand-alone projects.

Programming:

Interns in the department will assist the Programming Staff in various program planning, ratings research, and tape library tasks. Interns will be assigned on-going, daily responsibilities as well as stand-alone projects.

Finance:

Interns in the department will have the opportunity to work with the Finance Department and understand the purchasing and procurement cycle, as well as the employee expense reimbursement process and policies. They will work with Payroll in understanding the payroll cycle and work with Office Administration on learning various aspects of office management. Interns will work with Human Resources in understanding and ensuring that personnel files are in compliance with state and federal guidelines.

REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS

    • Ability to follow instructions
    • Assist the Finance Department with day to day workload
    • Assist the Human Resources/Payroll Department with weekly processing

Graphics:

Interns in the department will assist the Art Director of the Network with the creation and placement of graphic elements for the shows such as player headshots, images, and team or sponsor logos. Interns will be assigned on-going, daily responsibilities as well as stand-alone projects. . In addition to still graphics, the right candidate may be given the chance to create short animations in After Effects for air. You may also have the chance to use VIZ Artist, which is fast becoming a standard for live-to-air shows.

Interns in the department will assist the Marketing Staff in various consumer marketing, affiliate marketing, public relations, on-air promotion, and website related tasks. Interns will be assigned on-going, daily responsibilities as well as stand-alone projects.

    • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and creative skills

Digital Media:

Interns in the department will assist the SNY.tv Digital Media Staff in various production and marketing related initiatives including research, broadband production, editing content for the web site, generating traffic reports for analysis and assisting in the management of sales inventory. Interns will be assigned on-going, daily responsibilities as well as stand-alone projects.

Information Technology:

Interns in the department will have the opportunity to Opportunity to work with the IT Department and understand the day to day management of IT infrastructure. Learn some of the preparations of building a corporate network from the ground up. Learn corporate IT security policies and procedures. Learn skills to provide excellent customer service through the use of technology.

REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS

    • Ability to learn in a fast paced environment
    • Ability to communicate clearly, both written and verbal
    • Ability to follow instructions
    • Experience supporting Windows 2000 and XP, MS Office, Printers and Network connectivity
    • Assist the IT Department with day to day workload
    • Assist all SNY departments with technical issues with PC's and Network Printers.
    • Assist in day to day administrative duties
    • Research new technology that could benefit SNY
    • Able to commit at least three days per week (5 hours/day)

Edit Department:

The Editing Department at SportsNet New York, a regional cable television sports network, is responsible for the day-to-day editing, quality and content of SNY's on-air shows. The department edits 7 shows daily during baseball season including "Daily News Live," "The WheelHouse," "Loud Mouths," "Geico SportsNite" and Mets Pre and Post game. The staff must be able to turn around breaking news and be creative in a fast paced environment.

Interns, who must be entering their junior year in college with a 3.0 GPA and receiving college credit for the internship, get hands-on experience assisting in a wide range of the station's operations and work approximately 20 hours per week.

REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS

    • Screening/logging of games, press conferences/interviews and taped programs to prepare for editing
    • Helping Associate Producers in the edit rooms
    • Working on the production of "Daily News Live," "The WheelHouse," "Loud Mouths," "SportsNite" and Mets programming
    • Researching for the various graphic boards used in all shows
    • Assist the editors with gathering material and prepping content
    • Doing detail work to procure footage from external sources
    • All other duties needed in the station's everyday operation

Candidates should be concentrating in communications with a strong interest in televised sports and production, have some education or training in broadcasting, and proficiency in computers. They also should be familiar with the programming currently presented on SportsNet New York. This is an unpaid internship.
