Interns, who must be at least entering their junior year in college, receive college credit for the internship. Below is a brief description of each internship opportunity available.

News Department: The News Department at SportsNet New York, a regional cable television sports network, is responsible for the day-to-day planning and general implementation of SNY's on-air schedule. Additionally, the department produces "Daily News Live," "The WheelHouse," "Loud Mouths," "Geico SportsNite" and Mets programming, plus handles external communications with various independent program suppliers as well as internal communications with various SportsNet New York departments.

Interns, who must be entering their junior year in college with a 2.5 GPA and receiving college credit for the internship, get hands-on experience assisting in a wide range of the station's operations and work approximately 20 hours per week; 1 shift during the week plus 1 over the weekend -- shifts are 10a-6p and 3-11p.

Responsibilities include:

  • Screening/logging of games, press conferences/interviews and taped programs to prepare for editing
  • Helping Associate Producers in the edit rooms
  • Working on the production of "Daily News Live," "The WheelHouse," "Loud Mouths," "SportsNite" and Mets programming
  • Researching for the various graphic boards used in all shows
  • Preparing, copying and distributing programming information
  • Doing detail work to procure footage from external sources
  • Working the Assignment Desk, answering the main phone line

Operations:

Interns in this area report to the Studio & Remote Operations and Engineering Department Managers and are involved in the behind the scenes preparation and planning for all SNY shows both in studio and on remote.

The department edits 7 shows daily during baseball season including "Daily News Live," "The WheelHouse," "Loud Mouths," "Geico SportsNite" and Mets Pre and Post game. The staff must be able to turn around breaking news and be creative in a fast paced environment.

Interns, who must be entering their junior year in college with a 2.5 GPA and receiving college credit for the internship, get hands-on experience assisting in a wide range of the station's operations and work approximately 20 hours per week.

REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS

  • Screening/logging of games, press conferences/interviews and taped programs to prepare for editing
  • Helping Associate Producers in the edit rooms
  • Working on the production of "Daily News Live," "The WheelHouse," "Loud Mouths," "SportsNite" and Mets programming
  • Researching for the various graphic boards used in all shows
  • Assist the editors with gathering material and prepping content
  • Doing detail work to procure footage from external sources
  • All other duties needed in the station's everyday operation

Candidates should be concentrating in communications with a strong interest in televised sports and production, have some education or training in broadcasting, and proficiency in computers. They also should be familiar with the programming currently presented on SportsNet New York. This is an unpaid internship.
