Liberty acquires Willis via trade

NEW YORK [June 20, 2007] - The New York Liberty has acquired guard Lisa Willis from the Los Angeles Sparks in exchange for guard Sherill Baker, it was announced today by Senior Vice President and General Manager Carol Blazejowski.

Willis was the fifth overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft and averaged 4.6 points and 13.3 minutes in 24 games last season for Los Angeles in her rookie year. This season Willis has appeared in eight games and is averaging 9.6 mpg and 2.3 ppg. As a senior from UCLA, the 5-11 guard averaged 17.9 points, on 46-percent shooting, 5.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

"Lisa Willis adds not only depth to our backcourt, but size and outside shooting. She is an exceptional perimeter scorer, especially from three point range," Blazejowski said. "We are committed to developing the Liberty into a consistent competitor that can contend for a WNBA Championship by focusing on youth, versatility and size. This move further solidifies that goal."

Baker, a 5-8 guard, was selected 12th overall by the Liberty in the 2006 WNBA Draft and averaged 7.4 points and 17.9 minutes in 34 games her rookie season. This season, Baker has played in three games averaging 4.3 mpg and 1.7 ppg.
