NEW YORK -- Sherrod Wright sometimes hears from his friends in the city that Mount Vernon of Westchester County can't compete with the New York City basketball powerhouses.

He won't be hearing that much longer.

The 6-foot-4 Wright poured in a game-high 28 points to lift Mount Vernon to a dominating 70-54 victory over St. Raymond of The Bronx in the SNY Invitational championship at NYU's Coles Center.

That performance came one night after Wright scored 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in an upset of Thomas Jefferson of Brooklyn. In two nights, he scored a combined 60 points and took home the SNY Invitational MVP Award.

Mount Vernon (10-2) won the Fred Dressler championship trophy and officials from both schools were presented with checks for $5,000 from SNY.

"I was just feeling it," Wright said. "I'm coming off a wrist injury [in the preseason]. It's still bothering me and I'm just now trying to get into the flow of it. So when I start warming it up and start feeling good, this tournament felt good."

Wright said he injured his wrist "before the first game" when "somebody undercut me and I fell on them."

"I've just been battling that all season and it's finally starting to feel a whole lot better," he said. "I'm starting to get my stroke back and it's opening up my game."

Asked if he was at 100 percent, he called it 90 percent and said, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I could still get better."

That's some scary news for opponents.

Wright scored 15 points in the first half, when the Knights took a commanding 40-19 lead.

Sophomore guard Jabarie Hinds finished with 18 points and four assists for Mount Vernon and senior Odayne Clark grabbed 16 rebounds.

Sophomore big man Sidiki Johnson paced St. Raymond's (10-6) with 10 points and nine rebounds and earned the McDonald's Sportsmanship Award. Tyreak Johnson added 10 points for St. Ray's, which upset Boys & Girls on Friday night. Mount Vernon forced 22 St. Ray's turnovers and took advantage of a less experienced team.

"We just totally fell apart early," Ravens coach Oliver Antigua said. "We weren't ready for that kind of intensity. When you have a great player [like Wright], then he bangs one home and makes a shot."

On the other sideline, Mount Vernon coach Bob Cimmino was planning where to put his championship banner.

"It's just really fantastic," Cimmino said. "The one thing that runs through my mind is that our defense carried us. Our offense could be off but our defense should never be off."

He added: "I can't wait to go home now in our gym and get one of those beautiful SNY banners and put it up in my house."

Cimmino called Wright an "impact player" and said he was "proud of him."

Wright is an uncommitted senior who plans to sign during the late period in April. Cimmino previously said South Carolina, which Wright has already visited, and Oklahoma State were the "leaders" for Wright's services, but Wright still has to decide whether to leave the area or stay close to home. Fordham, Manhattan and Hofstra are also involved.

"I haven't pinpointed anything," Wright said. "There's new colleges coming in. I'm trying to make sure the process is right for me."
