Pittsburgh senior guard Jermaine Dixon fractured his right foot for a second time and is expected to be sidelined a minimum of eight weeks.
Dixon successful underwent bone graft surgery to correct a fifth metatarsal fracture on Wednesday morning at South Side Hospital. Team physicians Dr. Freddie Fu and Dr. Robin West, along with Pitt athletic trainer Tony Salesi, anticipate that Dixon will return to the court this year.
"We expect Jermaine to make a full recovery," Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon said. "The surgery was a success and we know that Jermaine will work hard during the rehabilitation process."
Dixon originally fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot in July.
He started all 36 contests for Pitt last year, averaging 8.4 points per game, hitting 32 3-pointers, ranking second on the team with 51 steals and finishing with a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Pitt already lost forward Gilbert Brown for the first semester for academic reasons.
The loss of Dixon puts added pressure on sophomore guards Ashton Gibbs and Travon Woodall; senior Chase Adams, a transfer from Centenary, who is eligible to compete immediately; and junior Brad Wanamaker.
