A year ago, Gus Gilchrist and Stanley Robinson both joined their Big East teams in December and proceeded to make a major impact.
Gilchrist averaged 10.2 points and 4.4 rebounds at South Florida and Robinson put up 8.5 points and 5.9 rebounds, turning it on when the Huskies made their run to the Final Four.
This season, more than a half-dozen Big East players become eligible in December, including four who will take the court this weekend for the first time. Cincinnati big man Ibrahima Thomas and DePaul junior guard Jimmy Drew became eligible this past week after transferring.
Here is a look at what's to be expected from the players debuting in the coming days.
Keon Lawrence, Junior, Guard, Seton Hall
Why he's eligible now: Reinstated after indefinite suspension related to causing a car accident on the Garden State Parkway
When he can play: Saturday vs. Temple
Coach's quote: "I think Keon will bring a real explosiveness. His quickness is going to help dramatically in our press. He can also score and will be a nice shot in the arm coming off the bench." - Bobby Gonzalez
Jeff Robinson, Junior, Forward, Seton Hall
Why he's eligible now: Sat out a year after transferring from Memphis
When he can play: Saturday vs. Temple
Coach's quote: "Jeff's biggest strength will be his toughness. He'll also help a lot in rebounding and give us great versatility guarding multiple positions on the defensive end." -- Bobby Gonzalez
Reggie Redding, Senior, Guard, Villanova
Why he's eligible now: Reinstated after being suspended by the university for the first semester for an on-campus incident last summer that violated the student code of conduct
When he can play: Saturday vs. Fordham, Izod Center
Coach's quote: "Reggie's in good shape. He's worked out extra hard over the past few months and obviously knows what we are doing. He's one of our best perimeter defenders and a great leader. Scottie [Reynolds] has been kind of doing that by himself and having Reggie back out there will help us. I think they'll be a great pair of leaders for us." - Jay Wright
Ater Majok, Freshman, Forward, Connecticut
Why he's eligible now: Cleared academically after he arrived mid-season last year
When he can play: Sunday vs. Central Florida
Coach's quote: "He hasn't yet scored a basket or blocked a shot or grabbed a rebound, but he's a good addition. How much an addition we'll have to see between now and the end of the month when we play Cincinnati [Dec. 30] and Notre Dame [Jan. 2] going against Yancy Gates and Luke Harangody. Why not put him in the mix and see if he can make a difference?" - Jim Calhoun to Andy Katz of ESPN.com
Gilbert Brown, Junior, Forward, Pittsburgh
Why he's eligible now: Returns after serving an academic suspension
When he can play: Tuesday vs. Ohio
Coach's quote: "For the first time this year, we will have our full complement of players to practice. With Gilbert's addition, we can obviously accomplish more at practice. Gilbert is a tremendous athlete and defensive player. With Gilbert and Jermaine Dixon getting back into the rotation following his injury, we will now have our two most experienced players on the floor." - Jamie Dixon
