NEW YORK -- Seton Hall remains alive in the Big East tournament and alive for an NCAA Tournament berth. But they didn't make it easy on themselves.
The No. 10 Pirates blew a 29-point second-half lead and advanced to the second round of the Big East with a 109-106 victory over No. 15 Providence after Friars freshman Duke Mondy missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.
"Luckily, Mondy missed and the ball came off," Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez said.
"To get an open 3-point look when you're down three with six, seven seconds to go, you can't ask for much more than that," Providence coach Keno Davis said.
Both teams eclipsed the previous record for most points in a regulation game. Seton Hall beat Syracuse, 103-70, in the 1993 title game.
All 10 starters reached double-figures. Brooklyn native Jamine "Greedy" Peterson led all with 38 points and 16 rebounds for Providence (18-12). Jersey City native Bilal Dixon added 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Herb Pope had 27 points and 11 rebounds for Seton Hall, Jordan Theodore scored 21 and Jeremy Hazell had 18.
The Pirates (19-11) advanced to a quarterfinal showdown Wednesday night with No. 7 Notre Dame, which had a bye in the first round. Seton Hall beat Notre Dame, 90-87, Feb. 11 in Newark.
There are seven Big East teams that figure to make the NCAA Tournament, and Notre Dame could be the eighth after a strong finish in which it beat Pittsburgh, Georgetown, UConn and Marquette. Notre Dame does not need to win this game to make the Tournament, but Seton Hall needs to win in order to have any kind of shot.
"Let me just say this," Gonzalez said. "We have 19 wins with no bad losses. We beat Notre Dame at our place. A lot of people are saying they're in. We know it's a big game. If we win, now all of a sudden we swept Notre Dame and we have 20 wins, so we'll leave it up to the people that make the decisions. But we just want to keep playing. Right now our guys are just focused on playing Notre Dame on Wednesday night."
