Hey everyone, it's the Olympics! You know, it's become fashionable of late to knock the Olympics. For whatever reason, a lot of people seem awfully proud of themselves for not watching the Olympics, as though simply watching something else on television is somehow a noble act. But I'm here to say I like the games. It's two weeks, every four years, it wouldn't kill you to watch a little badminton and root for America.
Mets: After losing nearly every game at home following the All-Star break, the Mets embarked on a road trip to see if that might help. Also, everyone around here was pretty much just sick of looking at them. Lo and behold, things didn't quite turn around, but they weren't quite as bad as they'd been. After losing six straight at home, three apiece to the Dodgers and Nationals, the Mets split a four-game set in Arizona with the Diamondbacks, the current reigning champions for dumbest mascot in all of sports. Congratulations to them. After somehow managing to lose Saturday's game despite three home runs from Ike Davis, New York got a superb effort from R.A. Dickey in a win on Sunday, as the knuckleballer appeared to regain the form that made him an All-Star over the first half of the season, you may recall that period as the time these Mets were good. Ahhh, the good old days. Yes, this Mets season isn't over -- there's literally a TON of games left to play -- but the portion where the games may have a larger meaning likely is. We're now left to just keep watching because, you know, baseball is still pretty awesome.

Yankees: If they weren't the Yankees, a team that's always good and blessed with such an obvious natural advantage, we might all be fairly impressed with how good this team has played despite a number of injuries that would have crippled just about any other club. Now, of course, we can point out that few teams could lose a Mariano Rivera and instantly replace him with a $12 million a year seventh-inning guy. But that's really beside the point, and admittedly being a little catty. The Yankees have had to overcome legitimate adversity and have mostly just kept on ticking. Which isn't to say they haven't had some struggles of late. After losing four straight to Oakland, New York took two of three from Seattle before losing two of three to Boston over the weekend. With a perfect chance to put away the Red Sox for good, the Yankees lost two straight on Saturday and Sunday after pulling off impressive rallies in each. On Saturday, things seemed to be going the Yankees way when Mark Teixeira strutted his way to a two-run homer off nemesis Vicente Padilla, but Boston found a way in an 8-6 Yankees loss. Things went the same way on Sunday, when New York sent the game to extras with a run in the bottom of the ninth only to fall in ten innings. Nonetheless, the Yankees will still take a robust 7.5 game lead in the AL East into series with Baltimore and Seattle.
Jets: The Jets opened training camp this week with Darrelle Revis not holding out and Tim Tebow Tebowing pretty much all over the place. Yes, every one in town seems to want to make the Jets' camp solely about Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow, even though one guy is the clear starting quarterback and the other is blocking on punts.
Giants: Oh, that's right, the Giants also opened this week, only to much less fanfare, despite the fact they are the defending champions and appear pretty loaded again. The Giants reported mostly happy and healthy, with nary a concerning word coming from anyone's mouths. This includes Victor Cruz who appears ready to dutifully play out his contract without insisting the team give him a hefty raise which is sort of insane. He really should.
